Carbs have gotten a bad name because of the fancy new diets like "Keto Diet", "Paleo Diets", or the low carb diet (not saying they don't deliver the results ).
Carbohydrates are a great source of instant energy, if you ever feel fatigue or low on energy eating a healthy snack full of carbs can get you vitalized in no time!
They are your body’s main source of energy. They help fuel your brain, kidneys, heart, muscles, and central nervous system too!
Some of the healthy carbs examples are
- Whole grains: quinoa, amaranth, barley, brown rice, oatmeal,
whole-grain pasta and whole-grain breakfast cereals - Fruits: berries, citrus fruits, melons, apples, pears, bananas and
kiwifruit - Starchy vegetables: sweet potatoes, yams, corn, peas and carrots
Legumes: lentils, black beans, pinto beans, navy beans, chickpeas
and soybeans - Milk products: low-fat milk, plain yogurt and soy yogurt
The great misconception
But one misconception most of us have is that all carbohydrates are created equal. But they are not. There are some which are easy to break down, and some which are more complex.
Simple carbohydrates
Ideally you should avoid simple carbs as it breaks down very easily into glucose causing an spike in your insulin levels. Constant consumption may lead to an insulin resistance, which will make you feel hungry constantly! (Yes we all know that feeling!)
Cookies, morning cereals, sugary products like chocolates, candy etc contain simple carbs and should be avoided.
Complex carbohydrate
Complex carbs are the type of carbs you should be adding to your diet. They take time to digest, and do not spike your insulin level like simple carbs and helps you provide slow burning energy throughout the day.
Example of complex carbs are oatmeal, Fruits, and Vegetables.
Choosing the right carbs and keeping an eye on it can take you a long way. That's why it's very important to consume Fresh Fruits & Veggies daily! :)
